An old proverb says “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” At Books from Birth of Middle Tennessee, we believe that teaching children to love reading is one of the most powerful tools we can give to ourcommunity. But many local preschool children are NOT prepared to learn.
We're proud to be a part if May's 12Giving!
Sperry's Restaurant (Cool Springs and Belle Meade), Sam's Sports Grill (Hillsboro Village, Hendersonville and Murfreesboro) and A.Thomas Meats will donate $1 to Books from Birth of Middle Tennessee. More information
2012 Kindergarten Registration for Metro Nashville Public Schools
As you know, once your child turns five and graduates from the Imagination Library, the next step is... Kindergarten! Having participated in our program, they now have a great foundation and love for reading. But there are many ins and outs for actually starting school. We want to help you prepare for this milestone because it's a big deal and may be a bit scary if you haven't navigated these waters yet. As parents, it's important to prepare your young child, and below are some tools you can use. The Mayor's office has provided some guides with tips to help make the transition:
Kindergarten Transition Guide - 2012 • Kindergarten Transition Guide (en Espanol) • Kindergarten Guide Booklet - 2012
Join us on Saturday, May 19 in the courtyard of the Nashville Public Library (615 Church Street) for a fun kick-off of the Mayor’s “Share A Book” reading campaign, from 1–4 p.m. Meet the Mayor, a live Predators player, the Sounds mascot, Ozzie, and enjoy a puppet show at 1pm.
How about volunteering with your mom on Mother's Day? We need 5-6 volunteers to help out on the morning of Sunday, May 13 for the Run Like a Mother 5K Race, benefiting Books from Birth. This is a really fun event that celebrates mom, health and wellness, and there is a post-race party for the ENTIRE family. We'll be finished by 11am, so there is still time to take mom out to lunch!
The Nashville Kids Triathlon is June 3, and if you list BOOKS FROM BIRTH as your "team," then $10 of your registration fee helps BFB buy books for local children. The race is specially designed for kids age 5 to 15, and the YMCA is offering FREE training courses if you sign up soon.
