For Patients and Families
The Everybody Has a Story CD project celebrates the creativity of children and youth at Children’s Hospital and shows how music helps them share their stories and emotions. It also embraces our community by inviting artists, musicians, producers, engineers, and other professionals in Nashville to partner with us.
Songwriting is an evidenced-based intervention in music therapy used with people of all ages and diagnoses. It fosters emotional expression, promotes creativity, and increases self-esteem. Many patients are in situations that are both new and often scary. Providing a child with the platform to express their emotions through words, stories, and images in the form of a song enables them to release emotions that are sometimes difficult to express.
This project is a tasting of some of the works by patients over the past six years. Each song is a result of a clinical music therapy session involving the patient and the music therapist. Songs were crafted in a variety of ways. Some lyrics were crafted out of a story idea and some were created during long discussions about the patient’s feelings and situation. The music therapist used the ideas and words provided by the patient to create a song. Music is written to align with the mood of the song and how the patient envisioned it to sound. For each recording, the patient or members of the patient’s family had the opportunity to experience the studio, meet the artist, and in some cases participate on the recording.
This project has been a labor of love and is just a small example of the resiliency of children and families facing a health crisis.
