For Patients and Families
As one of Tennessee’s larger law enforcement agencies, the Vanderbilt University Police Department provides comprehensive law enforcement and security services to all components of Vanderbilt University, including the academic campus, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and a variety of University-owned facilities throughout the Davidson County area.
The Police Department includes a staff of more than 100 personnel. All of Vanderbilt's commissioned officers have completed officer training at a state-certified police academy. Vanderbilt University police officers have the same authority as municipal law enforcement officers, while on property owned by Vanderbilt, on adjacent public streets and sidewalks, and in surrounding neighborhoods.
Vanderbilt University police and security officers are first responders to any non-medical emergency, act of violence, or criminal act that occurs within and around Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Direct radio and phone communications with local police and emergency medical personnel ensure that officers can initiate and direct additional emergency responders to the area if necessary. In an emergency situation, dialing 911 from any Vanderbilt telephone will contact the Vanderbilt Police Department communications center. A trained dispatcher will then direct the appropriate response to your emergency. For non-emergency calls to the Police Department, call 2-2745 from any Vanderbilt phone or (615) 322-2745 from other phones.
