Medical Genetics and Genomic Medicine

Vanderbilt is a national leader in genetic care and research. Our place at the forefront of discovery allows us to quickly bring research results to patient care. We diagnose, counsel, and treat patients with a wide range of genetic disorders, birth defects, and developmental problems.

Learning that you or your children may have a genetic disorder can be a confusing time. Our genetic counselors are here to help. They find potential genetic problems or risks using lab tests and talking to you about family history. If a problem is found, they help you understand the disorder and provide you with the latest treatment options.

Genetics Clinics
We serve children, teens, and adults in our Genetics Clinic on the 6th floor of Doctors' Office Tower at Children's Hospital. Learn about what to expect and how to prepare for a clinic visit.

Newborn Screening
Every newborn in Tennessee is tested for genetic disorders. Before your baby leaves the hospital, a nurse or health provider draws a few drops of blood to test for certain genetic problems. Learn more about newborn screening.

Research and Education
Exceptional faculty and leading edge clinical and research facilities enable us to train the next generation of leaders in genetics and genomic medicine. Read more about our opportunities for research and pre- and post- doctoral training.
