Keeps Me Going - 30 second audio clip:

About the Song from music therapist Jenny Plume

Erica was a young woman whose passion for her faith was incredibly strong. The walls of her hospital room were lined with passages from the Bible. She had worked on several songs when this song was created. She didn’t know what to write about, so I suggested that she create a list of her favorite quotes from the Bible. I returned the next day to find a very long list of meaningful passages. Much of this lyric are direct quotes from the Bible, arranged in song form. However, I felt it was important to include her personal feelings among these powerful lines.

We had a discussion about how she fights her disease and what keeps her so positive. Her answer was simple, yet profound; “Jesus is what keeps me going.” When I asked her who she would envision singing this song, she mentioned Melinda Doolittle of American Idol fame.

Erica lost her battle with cancer not long after this song was completed. It was one of the most moving experiences to have her immediate family join us in the studio to hear her song come to life with the amazing vocals by Melinda Doolittle.

The impact of Erica’s songwriting experiences were made abundantly clear when her family made a CD and lyric copies of each of the three songs she had written throughout her time at the hospital to share with attendees at her funeral service. Music was a definite source of healing both for her and for those who loved her.

Lyrics

Health to your marrow and moistening to your  bones
Sing like a sparrow cuz you’re not alone
The joy of the Lord is my strength this I know
This is why I hold on

Erica KilburnMy lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to you
Oh taste and see that the Lord is good
Give and it shall be given to you
Under his promise I feel strong

Arise take up your bed and walk with me
I once was blind but now I see
All this scripture, it brings courage to me
Jesus is what keeps me going
Yeah he’s what keeps me going

All things are possible through Christ who strengthens me
If I drink any deadly thing it won’t harm me
Your healing shall spring forth speedily
And I will praise you and you alone

Arise take up your bed and walk with me
I once was blind but now I see
All this scripture, it brings courage to me
Jesus is what keeps me going
Yeah he’s what keeps me going

You thought it would keep me down
But I keep going stronger and stronger

Arise take up your bed and walk with me
I once was blind but now I see
All this scripture, it brings courage to me
Jesus is what keeps me going
Yeah he’s what keeps me going
