That's Who I Am - 30 second clip:

About the Song from music therapist Jenny Plume

This song was written rather quickly. Chris had transformed from a young man who only listened to hip hop and rap music to a prolific country songwriter in just a few years.

This particular song was created from a fictional story that he recited to me one afternoon. I asked questions about the characters to keep the story going and in order to gather more details. Together we created That’s Who I Am, making Chris and his family extremely proud of his accomplishment.

Vince Gill’s soaring vocal brings the song to life and captures the essence of the lyric in his performance. Chris passed away after the recording, but left behind some wonderful songs and memories that will live on.

Lyrics

I grew up in L.A. and I like to play baseball
I’m five years old and I don’t have hardly anything at all
Except this little blue hat that goes with the bat
My mama gave me the very last time I saw her

I live with a family and they don’t even know I’m there
I can go for a walk 10 city blocks and they don’t even care
I have imaginary friends so I just pretend
We play baseball 'til the very end
Of the day, but it’s okay….cuz

That’s who I am
That’s all I have
That’s where I stand
That’s where I’m at
That’s all I have
That’s who I am

I moved in with a new family that had an older son
He became my big brother we were best friends with each other
We played ball 'til the setting sun
But then he had to go to war and I didn’t know what for
So I asked him not to go as he walked out the door
But he said to me, I have to leave…cuz

That’s who I am
That’s all I have
That’s where I stand
That’s where I’m at
That’s all I have
That’s who I am

A year went by and I tried not to think of him at all
But on Christmas Eve I started to believe when there was a
Knock at my bedroom door
He said, “I’m not going back to Iraq
I want you to know exactly where I’m at
There’s no other, like a big brother…cuz
