Newborn Nursery Electronic Documentation

In this era of HITECH, Meaningful Use, and evolving documentation standards, the Newborn Nursery has moved to electronic documentation utilizing templates in Star Panel (VUMC’s EMR).

To assist with this effort, additional computer stations have been added within the Newborn Nursery area. Documentation can also be completed via SecurID token from your home or office. Expectations are that the electronic documentation will be entered into Star Panel within 24 hours of seeing the patient.

System Support Services (SSS) has prepared an interactive learning module that will be available through a link to the SSS website on workstations in the nursery and on the Children’s Hospital website under the Physician Resources section.

Contained within this module will be details regarding electronic documentation templates, how to access, complete, add to favorites.

In addition, a “tip sheet” will be prepared with copies available at the computer workstations, and at the medical receptionist desk in the Newborn Nursery.

The existing templates in Star Panel to be used are titled:

  • History and Physical (NBN)
  • Daily Progress Note (NBN)
  • Discharge Summary (Newborn Nursery)
  • Procedure Note, Circumcision

All documentation must be completed in Star Panel. We encourage each practice to identify a physician champion for learning the electronic documentation process.

Other things to remember:

  • Use your VUNet ID for logging into Star Panel. Contact the Help Desk at 615-343-HELP if you are unsure of your VUNetID.
  • Verbal orders given for a patient in the Newborn Nursery must be signed by the physician giving the orders within 48 hours. To sign orders via SecurID token, you must first sign into a VPN account to get through the additional security. Contact Physician Services ( for information regarding VPN accounts.
  • When rounding on patients in the Children’s Hospital, please continue to coordinate any orders with the resident and allow the resident to enter the orders.

Please contact Physician Services at (615) 936-6025 with any questions.
