Susan Hernandez, MBA, R.N.
Susan Hernandez, MBA, R.N., has been named associate hospital director of nursing at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

In her new role, Hernandez will work to promote transformational leadership in clinical operations in the areas of Patient and Family Centered Care, Inpatient Nursing, Respiratory Care, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and Peri-Operative Nursing.

"Susan is the ideal person for this position because she embodies the culture of Vanderbilt Nursing," said Marilyn Dubree, M.S.N., R.N., executive chief nursing officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "She cares deeply about our patients and our staff. She is a strong leader who will help guide Children's Hospital forward."

Previously, Hernandez served as administrative director of Inpatient Services and administrative director of Critical Care Services.

During her time at Children's Hospital she has worked to establish and maintain high standards for patient safety and quality of care as well as to ensure compliance with policies and accreditation standards.

"Our entire leadership team is so excited to work under the direction and guidance of Susan Hernandez," said Marlee Crankshaw, R.N., director of Neonatal Services.

"She brings with her a strong commitment to our success. She encourages us to be great leaders by pushing us along, even when it is a difficult conversation or situation that we have to face, and has taught us by her example. She is always there for us."

Hernandez came to Vanderbilt in 1994 as a care partner. Since then she has served in various positions, including charge nurse, manager of General Surgery Clinics, manager of the Coronary Unit and Cardiovascular Step-Down Units and manager of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

"Susan is dedicated to all aspects of children's health. Her experiences as a school teacher and a nurse create a special blend of talents," said Luke Gregory, chief executive officer of Children's Hospital. "Her communication skills, leadership abilities and professional values are truly appreciated by our entire team."
