International Patients

The international outreach mission of Children's Hospital includes sending Children's Hospital specialists on international medical mission trips twice a year, as well as identifying patients that will be brought to Children's Hospital for more extensive services.

The information below is intended to serve as a guideline for a referring physician or agency to submit a child for international charity care. Patients can be referred to Children's Hospital by a physician who has seen the child or an agency sponsoring the child.

Prior to traveling to the U.S. with intent to seek surgical care under the International Charity Care Program, written and explicit approval from hospital leadership must be provided.

Process
The referring physician or agency must complete an International Patient Charity Request Form and send to our international project coordinator at internationalcharitycare@vanderbilt.edu.

All international charity care requests will be reviewed and evaluated based on the following conditions:

Qualifications
To qualify for international charity care, a patient must meet these criteria:

  • Live in a medically underserved area of the world where the specialized medical care needed is not available.
  • Must be collectively considered ‘repairable' with a good, long term prognosis by physicians serving on the International Leadership Committee.
  • Must be able to recover in home-country without extensive or complicated follow-up care.
  • The range of risk for surgical care and anesthesia is minimal.
  • Must have local housing in place not provided or paid for by Children's Hospital.
  • Patient has transportation means provided by sponsoring agency or international referral source.
  • Sponsoring physician and/or agency shall provide $5,000 stipend to support Children's Hospital. Stipend is subject to selective waiver by the International Leadership Committee.

Children's Hospital Criteria
When a patient meets the qualifications above, Children's Hospital must also:

  • Be at a low census, as defined by hospital leadership, at the time of request and/or service.
  • Have a balance remaining in the International Charity Account.
  • Have identified a sponsoring physician (Physician Champion) for the child who will present the child's case for consideration of approval to the International Leadership Committee.

Review and Approval
The International Leadership Committee will review cases at an upcoming meeting and base a collective decision on the previously outlined criteria.

The Committee's decision will be communicated to the sponsoring agency and champion physician. If approved, appropriate contact will commence.
