Ahmya Calloway was Children's Hospital's first combined heart/liver transplant patient, May 2016
Ahmya Calloway,13, was Children's Hospital's first combined heart/kidney transplant patient. Her transplant surgery enabled her to start back to school where she can now keep up with friends.

Since our first pediatric heart transplant in 1987, Children’s Hospital has offered children with end-stage heart problems the hope of better health.

Our program performs 10 to 12 pediatric heart transplants a year and has completed more than 180 transplants. We also follow about 125 transplant patients at any given time. With survival rates above the national average, our transplant program is one of the best in the nation.

We are proud of our numbers, but they don’t tell the whole story. Our transplant team is dedicated to supporting families and patients before, during, and after the transplant.

Better support for better outcomes
  • We use leading-edge ventricular assist devices (VADs) that increase a child’s chances of getting a heart.
  • We do not use steroids for maintenance immunosuppressive management. New drugs that suppress the immune system with fewer side effects are helping children recover faster and stay healthy longer.
  • Noninvasive tests, such as echocardiograms, are better at pinpointing problems. They hurt less and reduce stress.
  • Your child receives crucial interventional catheterization and arrhythmia management support before and after transplantation.
  • Our program is strengthened by the many support services at Children’s Hospital.
