Our Team, Our Mission
Our mission is to provide the most advanced diagnosis and care for our patients. Our patients are mothers and their unborn babies when the unborn baby has a health problem. We coordinate your care and offer compassionate support during pregnancy. This team support is extended through the birth of your baby.
What is a Multidisciplinary Approach?
Our Fetal Team is a "multi-disciplinary" team. We bring a group of expert medical providers from different specialties to work together in one place for you. In one appointment, you may have visits ("consultations") with one or more specialists on our team. You will benefit from the care of leading medical specialists in the most convenient way.
Our team is made up of specialists in the following areas: Maternal-Fetal Medicine (High-Risk Obstetrics), Neonatology, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Urology, Pediatric Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Radiology, Genetics, and Medical Ethics.
We offer consultations for a variety of fetal abnormalities including, but not limited to:
- Genetic abnormalities
- Myelomeningocele/ Hydrocephalus
- Congenital Heart Disease
- Congenital cystic lung abnormalities (CCAM)
- Intestinal abnormalities
- Kidney/bladder abnormalities
- Polyhydramnios and oligohydramnios
- Cleft lip / cleft palate
- Congenital diaphragmatic hernia
Weekly Fetal Conference
Our team meets with other experienced colleagues weekly to discuss diagnoses, delivery plans, and birth results. The team also uses this time to discuss recent research which might affect the way we diagnose and treat our patients.
Neonatology and the NICU
Depending on your baby's diagnosis, he or she may need to receive care in the Vanderbilt Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after delivery. If this seems likely, we will introduce you to the NICU by giving you a NICU tour during one of your visits.
U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks our Division of Neonatology as the 8th best program in the nation.
