Asthma Basics

Asthma is a lifelong breathing problem that affects nearly five million children in the U.S. It is caused by swelling and closing of the airways inside the lungs, making breathing more difficult.

Asthma symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. There is no cure for asthma, but there are methods that can control it.

Effects of asthma on lung airways

Get your asthma under control

We will ask you and your child a lot of questions during a typical clinic visit. Your answers help us work together together on a management plan.

A visit to the clinic often includes a lung function test to learn how well your child's lungs are working. Children over five years of age are usually able to perform a test called spirometry.

Asthma triggers
Asthma triggers can make symptoms worse. Our experts can help you identify triggers and explain how to avoid them.

Asthma treatment
For most children, asthma can be well controlled by following a treatment plan.

  • Make sure your child has the right medicine and is taking it as instructed.
  • Understand what triggers symptoms and how to avoid them.
  • Children old enough to use an inhaler on their own should always keep it nearby.
  • Make sure schools and coaches know about your child's asthma.

Our team approach to care
Our asthma specialists are here to help you develop an asthma management plan. The team includes pediatric pulmonologists, allergists, nurse practitioners, asthma nurses, a pharmacist, and a respiratory therapist. You and your child are also an important part of our team.
