Spina Bifida Clinic Services

The Spina Bifida Clinic at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt addresses the unique needs of children diagnosed with spina bifida.

Your appointment in the Spina Bifida Clinic is not like a simple doctor visit. In one appointment, you may have visits with one or more specialists on our team. Our clinic works with families and provides care the fields of neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition counseling, social work, and orthotics.

The clinic also helps put together a care plan with other medical areas that your child may need, such as developmental medicine and gastroenterology.

Follow-up services

Children's Hospital wants to ensure children who have received care for spina bifida continue to thrive and see improved health. We offer a series of follow-up exams who have the repair either prenatally or postnatally.

  1. We see spina bifida patients two weeks after their NICU discharge, then
  2. Every 3 months for the first year, then
  3. Every 6 months from ages 1 to 3, then
  4. Annually until age 18.

At that point we assist in transitioning patients to adult providers. We also see spina bifida patients at individual providers’ clinics as needed.

New procedure for hydrocephalus

Children's Hospital is now offering the endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) procedure for some cases of hydrocephalus, which is a side-effect of the most common form of spina bifida. Read more about this procedure.

National Spina Bifida Patient Registry

The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is one of only nine medical centers in the US the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) funds for both its National Spina Bifida Patient Registry and its Urologic Protocol for Young Children.
