Bathroom, Doors, Windows, Stairs and Furniture Safety

When it comes to childproofing your home, there are a lot of things to think about. Follow this list to cover the basics for the bathroom, doors, windows, stairs and furniture to ensure a safe environment for your child.

Bathroom

  • The water heater thermostat should be set below 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • All children should be supervised while in the bathtub.
  • Razor blades, nail scissors, nail polish and remover, medications, cosmetics, perfumes, shoe polish, and cleaners should all be stored in a locked cabinet.
  • Electrical outlets should all be grounded with circuit breakers.
  • Childproof latches should be installed on all drawers.
  • Toilets should remain closed. Curious children may benefit from a toilet lock.
  • Hair dryers, curling irons, and electric razors should be unplugged when not in use.
  • Nonskid strips on the bottoms of bathtubs help prevent slipping and falling.

Doors, windows, stairs, and furniture

  • Install childproof locks on all doors.
  • Install safety bars or window guards on upper story windows. These should be easily removable by an adult in the event of a fire evacuation.
  • Tie window blind cords with clothespins or cord clips.
  • Install hardware-mounted safety gates at the top and bottom of all stairways.
  • Place guards or netting on banisters, railings, balconies, and decks if your child’s head can fit through these areas.
  • Secure bookshelves, TVs and other furniture with wall brackets to prevent tipping.
  • Install corner and edge bumpers on corners of coffee tables and counter tops to soften sharp edges.
