Burn Prevention

Burns are one of the most common injuries to children. Each year, around 80,000 children are treated for burn injuries in emergency rooms.

Here are several steps you can take to reduce the risk of burn injuries.

  • Set your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Always test bath water with your hand or a bath thermometer before bathing children.
  • Always supervise your children while they are bathing.
  • Place hot foods and liquids in the center of the table or counter, away from the edges where a child may reach.
  • Find a fun and safe task for young children to help with while preparing the family meal, like washing vegetables or folding napkins. This will keep them involved, but away from the stove and hot liquids.
  • Keep electrical cords out of children's reach.
  • Keep all flammable objects such as fireworks and ligters away from children.
