Emergency Preparedness

Although emergencies tend to be unexpected, we can help ensure they are well managed.

Talk to your children to make sure everyone knows what to do during an emergency.

Create an emergency kit

  • This kit should consist of enough drinking water (three gallons per person) and non-perishable food items to last your family at least three days.
  • Make copies of important paperwork such as insurance and benefits cards, immunization records, driver's license, birth certificates, financial records, etc.)
  • Include other basic supplies such as a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kid, warm clothes, blankets, and a battery-operated radio.

Things for an emergency kit

Develop an emergency plan

  • Involve your children in creating an emergency plan. Ask for their help and input.
  • Identify safe places in your home for various emergency situations.
  • Explain how, when, and whom to call for help. Make sure your children have access to these persons' first and last names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • Identify a meeting place outside of your home for your family to meet in case of a fire or other emergency.
  • Use pictures to illustrate your emergency evacuation routes and make sure to include two exits from every room in the house (a door and a window).

Practice, practice, practice!

Help your children become comfortable with what to do in an emergency situation by practicing your escape plan at least twice a year.
