Holiday Safety

The holidays are a fun time of year for everyone, especially children. Take a few minutes to ensure your kids enjoy a safe holiday season by following these guidelines.

  • Inspect holiday lights each year. Checking for frayed wires, broken sockets, or excessive wear.
  • Look for the "ETL" or "UL" label on lights to make sure they have been tested for safety.
  • Only adults or older children with supervision should light candles.
  • Store candles, matches, and lighters out of sight and reach of children.
  • Artificial trees should have a "fire resistant" label.
  • Water live trees frequently, keeping the stand filled with water at all times.
  • Keep all trees at least three feet away from any heat source, including candles.
  • Use flame-resistant materials to decorate a tree.
  • Turn off the lights and extinguish candles when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Use safety plug protectors to keep children from putting items into electric outlets.

  • Consider your child's age and skill level when selecting toys.
  • Always look for quality construction, and follow all safety guidelines.
  • Look over toys regularly for damage and hazards such as sharp edges or chipping paint.
  • Eliminate choking hazards by using a small-parts tester, or toilet paper roll. Any item that can fit inside the tester or roll poses a choking hazard to children under three.
  • Avoid toys with straps or cords longer than seven inches to help prevent strangulation.
  • Avoid toys with batteries or electrical plugs with children under eight to help prevent burns.
