Poison Safety

Each year, more than 1.2 million children under five are unintentionally poisoned. Nine out of 10 fo these exposures to poison occur in the home.

Follow these safety guidelines to help keep your child safe from poison:

  • Keep the Tennessee Poison Center number stored in your cell phone and near every phone: 800-222-1222 (24 hours, 7 days a week).
  • Read product labels to check for poisonous ingredients. The following common household products are unsafe for children: Bleach, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners, dishwasher products, medications, plantsm, makeup, pesticides, art supplies, alcohol.
  • Use child safety locks on cabinets where poisonous items are stored.
  • Keep cleaning products in their original packages to avoid confusion.
  • Choose child-resistant medication packages when available. Discard unused medication.
  • Follow dosage instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist for all medication.
  • Never tell a child that medicine is candy to encourage them to take it.
  • When guests are visiting your home, make sure their medicines are stored out of sight and reach as well.
  • Homes built before 1978 should be tested for lead-based paint. Make sure your child does not have access to peeling paint.
  • Install a carbon monoxide alarm outside of every sleeping area and on every level of your house. Place them at least 15 feet away from every fuel-burning appliance. Test them every month and replace them every 5 years.
  • Never leave a car or other vehicle running inside of garage, even if the garage door is open.
