Your Visit

Emergency Room SignDuring your visit to the Emergency Department, we will ask you and your child about the following:

  • Chief complaint
  • Signs and symptoms
  • When illness began
  • Treatments you have provided or been prescribed by another health care provider
  • Medical history, including allergies, immunizations, and medications

We consider you to be the expert on your child. Listening to you helps us provide the best care. Please share any information about your child that you feel is important.

Depending on your child's needs, the doctor will determine if admission to the hospital is necessary, or if you can be released. If admitted, you and your child will move to one of the pediatric units and a new team of doctors and nurses will begin treatment.

Going home
When your child is discharged from the Emergency Department, the nurse will give you a copy of the doctor's discharge instructions. The nurse will explain the instructions and give you any prescriptions the doctor has written. It is very important that you understand and follow the discharge instructions. You are responsible for your child's health care. If you do not understand something, please ask. You will then be escorted with your child to the discharge station.
