Our Team

The ECMO Program at Children's Hospital has been in existence since 1989. Since then it has helped over 1,000 patients. Between 2015 and 2016 we ranked 17th in the U.S. for ECMO programs in volume. Internationally we ranked 24th. Ours is the busiest program of its kind in our region.

We have used ECMO to treat neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in respiratory failure from ARDS, pneumonia, status asthmaticus, congenital diaphramatic hernia, and other causes. It has supported patients in cardiac failure, and has been used as a conduit for hemodialysis for patients with problems including inborn errors of metabolism. The ECMO team also assists with Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).

The Children's Hospital ECMO team includes doctors, registered nurses, and registered respiratory therapists.

The nurses and respiratory therapists who provide direct management of the ECMO circuit are called ECMO Specialists. Specialists stay at the ECMO pump along with a specially trained bedside nurse.

We have 11 registered nurses and 11 registered respiratory therapists who serve as ECMO Specialists. We are a fully dedicated team which means we have ECMO Specialists ready without delay to provide ECMO services 24 hours per day, every day of the year. Each shift is staffed with at least three ECMO Specialists. We currently have the staff and equipment to routinely run four ECMO patients at one time, with the ability to take on a fifth as needed.

Our ECMO Team has a combined clinical experience of more than 300 years.

If you have questions or suggestions for the ECMO Team you may direct them to the ECMO Manager or the ECMO Surgical Director.
