Our team is proud to partner with Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and The Shalom Foundation to improve the lives of children in Central Guatemala through better health care and access to treatment and education.
Steve Goudy, M.D. from Pediatric Otolaryngology, was part of the team that first met a little girl named Joseline when they travelled to Guatemala to treat children with head and neck masses, ear/nose/throat conditions, and cleft lips and palates.
The 6-month-old girl had a large lymphatic mass on her neck. Her mother, Veronica Santay, wanted to try more conservative treatments first, but when the team returned later that year, the mass was still growing. The surgery would require better equipment than what was available in Guatemala, so The Shalom Foundation paid for Joseline and her mother to travel to the United States. Children's Hospital and her doctors donated the surgery and treatments.
