Admit, Transfer, or Transport a Patient

We are available 24 hours a day to schedule transport service and help you determine the most appropriate mode of patient transport.

Admission

Children's Hospital handles all pediatric admissions by physicians or hospitals through the Children's Access Center, available 24 hours a day at (615) 936-4444 and toll free at (866) 936-7811.

For emergency department evaluation call (615) 343-2996 and press 1. Our staff will take patient information, a brief clinical history, and phone numbers for call back. We will send the information directly to the Pediatric ED, or connect the caller to the ED resident, fellow, or attending as requested.

Patient information

The Access Center will collect the following information for each admission request.

  • Name
  • Birth date
  • Medical record number (if available)
  • Diagnosis 
  • Urgent or emergent admission 
  • Patient history and plan
  • Attending of record and phone number
  • Departure location, (e.g. physician’s office, hospital)
  • Transport (e.g. ambulance, car, helicopter)

If patient is suspected of having a potentially life-threatening condition and is designated as a candidate for the PCCU, the Access Center will connect you with the PCCU attending or fellow to assist in transfer coordination and patient management.

Process for admissions

Physicians with admitting privileges: The Access Center will obtain the above information, initiate the bed request, and ensure receiving staff is notified of the incoming patient and any specific requests.

Physicians without admitting privileges: On recorded lines, the Access Center will obtain the above information and connect the caller with the appropriate attending or fellow to discuss the admission and recommended transfer.

Upon identification of an accepting physician the Access Center will provide the referring with the number to call, report the final destination of patient at Children's Hospital, and ensure the receiving clinical staff are notified of the incoming patient's arrival.
