VPN Secure Off Campus Access and Remote Signing of Orders

VPN (Virtual Private Network) overview

To sign orders in Star Panel using your SecurID token when you are not at a Vanderbilt computer, you will need to download the VPN client Junos Pulse. If you are using Windows 8.1 and above, Junos Pulse may be built into your operating system.

If needed, download Junos Pulse VPN. Login with your active VUNetID and ePassword is required. Select the appropriate download for your device.

The NCS Network Security Team implemented a Junos Pulse VPN solution to meet the needs of VUMC faculty and staff for easier remote access while preserving confidential patient information. These devices are located within the VUMC network and are used to help preserve data confidentiality and data integrity.

This solution allows the user to connect to the VUMC network via a web browser. It uses SSL to open a secure connection, commonly referred to as a tunnel, between the user's computer and the SSL device at VUMC. This allows the user to access information at VUMC via the Internet without the traffic being readable to others.

Compatibility

This program requires ActiveX and should be run Internet Explorer 7 or higher. It may be possible to run this program through Chrome and Firefox with Java installed, but these browsers aren't officially supported and can be prone to bugs.

After logging in to a VPN account, credentialed physicians can sign patient orders remotely using their VUNetID and ePassword or a SecurID token, download IMPAX 6 and view radiology images, and access other data on the VUMC networks.

Accessing VPN on home or off-campus devices

  • VUNetID and ePassword are required to access VPN.
  • Read the instructions for installing VPN on your device.
  • To install VPN on the device, log in and select the appropriate download. Click START and follow the download and installation instructions. Users must have a VUNetID and active ePassword to download the VPN client.

Community pediatricians with admitting privileges can follow instructions under the Process for Accessing VPN on home or off-vampus devices instrucitons above, after receiving a VUNetID and creating an ePassword. For questions about VUNet ID or access, contact Physician Services at (615) 936-6025.

Remote signing of orders

  • Log in to VPN with VUNet ID and ePassword. You can verify that Junos Pulse is running by clicking on the arrow in your system tray. You may also have the Junos Pulse icon in the tray for connecting and disconnecting easily .
  • Log in to Star Panel using your VUNetID and ePassword or via SecurID token.
  • In Star Panel you may receive a pop-up message to sign pending orders or select Worklists in the left menu bar.
  • Select Cosign only my orders (orders given directly by you) or Cosign orders on my patients (orders given by residents or partners but you are the attending physician signing the orders).
  • After logging out of Star Panel, sign out of VPN or shut down the computer to sign out (closing the browser does NOT log out of VPN).
  • Once you are finished using VPN, you will need to click on Junos Pulse icon in the system tray and select Disconnect.

Community physicians with questions about VUNetID, SecurID token, or access should contact Physician Services at (615) 936-6025.
