Acute Care Rehabilitation

 

Injury and illness can greatly impact a child's physical, educational, emotional and social development. The Rehabilitation team at at Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt works with children and their families to restore health and healing following illness or injury. We identify your child's immediate need, and then create a personalized plan to facilitate recovery, from hospitalization to long-term wellness.

Our team of Occupational, Physical and Speech Therapists enhance participation in everyday activities so your child can return to home, school or work. 

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy focuses on helping children, teens and young adults improve fine motor skills and independent living skills. We provide assessment and treatment of fine motor, sensory processing and self-care skills.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy focuses on providing care to babies, children, teens and young adults with acute issues that impact gross motor functioning. Our physical therapists focus on positioning for development, range of motion, strengthening, massage, mobility, wheelchair and car seat assessments for acute care issues.

Our occupational and physical therapists have experience working with diagnoses including

  • Burns
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Childhood cancers
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Neurological conditions
  • Developmental delay
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Sensory processing disorder
  • Musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries

Speech therapy

Our speech-language pathologists can evaluate and treat your child with communication disorders. They also offer services for feeding and swallowing disorders.

Our faculty members also work with the Complex AeroDigestive Evaluation Team (CADET) Clinic to evaluate and care for for chronically ill children with complex airway (voice box, windpipe), pulmonary (lung), upper digestive tract (esophagus, stomach), sleep, and feeding disorders.

Our speech therapy services include

  • Oral-motor feeding evaluations
  • Video fluoroscopic swallow studies
  • Oral-motor feeding and swallowing therapy
  • Caregiver training
  • Augmentative/alternative communication system
  • Treatment of children with speech or language delays
