Risks of Anesthesia

Releasing a child into the care of another individual is possibly the most difficult thing a parent may be asked to do. Our staff understands this difficulty. Many of us are parents, too. This is why it is our continuous goal to care for our patients as if they were our own children.

All procedures, operations, and anesthesia involve certain risks. Because of advancements in pharmacology, technology, and medical science during the past decades, the risks associated with anesthesia have become remarkably small. Furthermore, the anesthesia team takes special precautions in each case to further reduce risk. Still, these risks are not zero, and they are often not trivial.

Risks of anesthesia involve many factors including the type of operation, and the medical status and age of the patient. It is difficult, if not impossible, to elaborate here the likely and unlikely risks associated with all cases. The best approach is to discuss the potential risks with your anesthesiologist prior to your child's operation.
