Special Needs Mobility Clinic

Wheelchair and mobility seating

Our Occupational and Physical Therapists are trained to assess children up to age 18 for mobility devices and seating systems, to improve their positioning and promote functional independence. We customize manual and power wheelchairs, as well as other seating devices, to improve functionality and prevent orthopedic and pressure difficulties. We work directly with durable medical equipment dealers who are qualified on mobility devices, keeping up to date on quality and technology.

Special-needs car seats

A child's special health care needs may require additional support during transportation that a conventional car seat cannot meet. Certain therapists at Children’s Hospital’s Rehabilitation Department are Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) and trained in the use of medical car seats.

Candidates for the Special Needs Transportation Clinic include children whose weight has exceeded the limit of the five-point harness but still require additional trunk support. Others include children with behavioral safety concerns that conventional restraints cannot meet.

If you have general child passenger safety questions for children who do not require specialized transportation equipment, contact the Safety Store at the Children’s Hospital at (615) 936-1869.

Equipment clinic

Our Occupational and Physical Therapists can also assess clients up to age 18 for adaptive equipment, such as standing frames, walkers, gait trainers, bath chairs, lifts, and positioning chairs.

Our clinic provides demonstrations of various equipment to help families and caregivers make well-educated decisions on what will work for the child and caregiver.

Referrals and appointments

Before scheduling a medical evaluation, we require a medical referral from a physician or nurse practitioner. Fax referrals to (615) 343-0506.

All appointments are located at Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Services at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks.
